When crafting a new dress, set yourself apart from the crowd with techniques that will produce a long-lasting, sturdy garment. Gothic dress design and construction is simple with smart thinking and thoughtful sewing.
Don't Skimp on Materials
1. Use top-quality materials when crafting a Gothic dress. Mass-produced scene wear often uses cheap fabric and poor trimmings. Polyester velour and dull fabrics seldom achieve the regal look that defines Gothic fashion. A well-made Gothic dress will last through years of clubbing and event attendance, so choose well and spend wisely.
Reinforce Grommets and Other Fasteners
2. Gothic clothing often has corset lacing that requires lots of grommets. Likewise, zippers, clasps and hooks are also popular. These bones often bend and twist inside of the casing, and may not offer the correct amount of support. Instead, use proper corset or Rigilene brand boning. You'll pay a bit more, but the corset won't fall apart. For extra measure, use a metal busk for the front of the garment instead of plain boning.
Try the Deconstructed Look
4. Instead of sewing a finished edge on a garment, leave the edge bare and jagged. This gives the garment an urchin-like, aged feeling, especially once the garment frays and the fabric softens. This is best with more romantic apparel, rather than the more structured cybergothic or fetish looks. Other ways to become deconstructed include slashing fabric, splashing with bleach and adding small burn holes.
Be Careful When Hemming
5. When setting a hem for a Gothic dress, make certain to so in the shoes or boots that you'll most likely be wearing. Often, Gothic fashion dictates tall platform boots that necessitate a longer hem than normal. This is an especially important point for skirts and dresses that must sweep the floor, since platforms routinely add another three inches or more to your height.
Leave Your Color Comfort Zone
6. Red and black are the first choices that come to mind for many Gothic dresses. But don't overlook forest green, purple and midnight blue. Some patterns also look very smart, including pinstripes and small polka dots. i looked around a lot at stores that i imagined carrying a shirt like that. But I couldn't find anything. Though from the style of that shirt you may like other clothing at stores like charlotte russe, forever 21, delias, and vanity.
